A mask reveals more than a face!
In this workshop, participants explore the fascinating world of mask work and puppetry, combined with improvisation. You'll learn the basics of both art forms — and discover how to bring characters to life in unique, unforgettable ways.
Professional theatre masks turn the whole body into an instrument of emotion.
Workshop Structure
The session is divided into two parts:
- Full Mask Play: We focus on full mask play — fully transforming yourself by 'hiding' behind the mask. A deep exploration of non-verbal expression through body language and movement.
- Half-Mask Play with Improvisation: We transition to half-masks, which allow participants to speak and interact more freely — blending mask work with improvisation.
What you'll explore
- Different Masks: Full masks, character masks, commedia dell'arte masks and half masks — each with a distinct expressive quality and strong character potential.
- Body Language and Freedom: Discover how crucial body language is in mask work. Experience the world through 'alien' eyes and break the "talking heads" dynamic often seen in improv.
- Mask Interviews: Communication without words — bringing your masked character to life in profound, non-verbal ways.
- Counter-Mask Technique: Learn how faces can deceive us and use this tool to enhance storytelling and character development.
- Puppetry (Muppet-style): Bring inanimate objects to life through physical manipulation and improvisation — creating dynamic characters that interact with others on stage in fun, surprising ways.
Games and Materials
We'll play games like the Dating Game for Masks — exploring how masks and puppets affect movement, behaviour and interaction. A collection of professional full and half masks, muppet-like puppets, play objects, hats and costumes will be provided. All masks are sanitised after each use.
