Full Day Improv Workshop – RomCom: Building Platforms, Finding the Game

This full-day workshop is for improvisers who already have some stage time under their belt and want to go deeper. We’ll spend the morning sharpening two of the most important — and most misunderstood — skills in improv: building a strong platform at the top of a scene, and finding the game once it’s there.

In the afternoon, we’ll put those skills to work inside one of the most fun and audience-friendly formats out there: the Romantic Comedy. Meet-cutes, escalating obstacles, will-they-won’t-they tension, big swings for love — all built entirely on the spot, using the same platform and game-finding tools from the morning.

RomCom works so well as an improv format because the audience already knows the genre by heart. Everyone recognizes a meet-cute, a jealous ex, or a grand gesture the moment it starts — so the players can commit to the emotion 100% while the plot escalates into pure genre absurdity, and the laughs come from that gap between sincere feeling and over-the-top cliché. It’s a format built on heightening, which is exactly the improv skill we’re training all day, just given a shape everyone in the room can follow instantly.

The evening has two parts. First, the possibility to perform a short RomCom-style show, built by the participants, for friends, family, and anyone curious to watch. Afterwards, an open stage for everyone in the room to jump in and play. No extra rehearsal — just putting the day’s work into practice in front of a real audience. What you’ll work on

• ✓ Establishing a clear platform: who, where, and what’s the relationship
• ✓ Spotting the game inside a scene instead of forcing one
• ✓ Heightening and exploring without losing the game
• ✓ Applying platform and game to the RomCom format: meet-cutes, obstacles, and payoff
• ✓ Building romantic and comedic tension scene by scene
• ✓ Bringing it all together in a live RomCom-style show, followed by an open stage for everyone
